Meet the Team:

As our Director of Engineering, you will lead a team of around 60 engineers organized under 4 Senior Engineering Managers, driving both technical excellence and cultural transformation. You'll be responsible for modernizing our platform and building EMSPaaS ( e-Mobility Service Provider as a Service) - empowering others to create delightful charging experiences across Europe and Japan. This is a rare opportunity to shape the future of e-mobility while reigniting an engineering culture built on innovation, experimentation, and cutting-edge practices. Reporting directly to the Chief Technology and Operations Officer, you'll be a key member of the technology leadership team, balancing strategic vision with hands-on technical credibility

  • Attracting Top Talent: Partner with recruiting to build a talent pipeline in a competitive Berlin market, creating a compelling employer brand that excites world-class engineers
  • Servant Leadership in Action: Remove blockers, empower teams to make decisions, and create psychological safety while maintaining high standards and accountability
  • Bridging Technical & Business: Collaborate closely with product, architecture, and business stakeholders across our European and Japanese markets to align technology strategy with business outcomes
  • Championing Best Practices: Evolve our software development lifecycle, establish engineering standards, and advocate for modern development practices that increase velocity and quality
  • Staying Technical: Maintain technical credibility by diving into architecture reviews, complex problem-solving, and critical technical decisions when the situation demands it

 

Your Profile:

  • Proven Leadership at Scale: 10+ years in software engineering with at least 5 years leading engineering managers and building organizations of 50+ engineers
  • Strong background in FinTech and Cloud technologies (ideally Azure), with hands-on experience in distributed systems, microservices architecture, and modern development practices
  • Builder of Cultures: Track record of transforming engineering organizations - you know how to create urgency, inspire excellence, and make engineers excited to come to work
  • Strategic Thinker, Pragmatic Doer: You balance long-term vision with short-term execution, knowing when to be bold and when to be pragmatic
  • Talent Magnet: Demonstrated ability to attract, hire, and retain excellent engineers even in competitive markets
  • Modern Tech Mindset: Passionate about emerging technologies and practices - AI, agentic coding, platform engineering, developer experience, and continuous experimentation
  • You lead by example, roll up your sleeves when needed, and genuinely care about growing people while driving results
  • Cross-Cultural Agility: Experience working with international teams and stakeholders, comfortable operating in European and Asian business contexts
  • Hands-On When Needed: While not writing code daily, you can dive into Java/Kotlin, Spring Boot, cloud architectures, and make informed technical decisions
  • Agile & Fast-Paced: Comfortable in dynamic environments, you thrive on change and bring a bias for action rather than analysis paralysis
  • Communication Excellence: Ability to influence without authority, present technical strategy to executives, and rally teams around a shared vision
